• Medica11y (2023+)

  Privacy-focused personal health records designed to keep medical data safely under the user's control. It generates portable HTML records with a sensible structure, local processing, JSON import and export, and no third-party data storage.

• Asset Config (2023+)

  A web application for creating and managing essential but tiny website files and formats. It provides tools for assets such as sitemaps, robots.txt, security.txt, metadata, feeds, HTML/CSS templates, favicons, user experience, and server configuration.

• Semantic Web Hook (2023+)

  The dependency-free JavaScript framework for turning semantic markup and structured data into useful browser features. It supports HTML5, microformats, metadata, RDF, and other useful formats for navigation, discovery, and conversion.

• Syntaxonomy (2023+)

  Structured learning for web designers and developers covering the web platform, software, languages, design, accessibility, and more. It combines learning paths with curated tools, articles, specifications, and resources, all in categories.

• Gratis Library (2023+)

  A free digital library offering curated ebooks and podcasts for web developers and designers. It brings together useful material covering web development, design, accessibility, programming, and related fields for easy discovery.

• Christmas Media (2023+)

  A curated guide to Christmas movies and music, spanning decades and genres. It brings together festive favorites and lesser-known choices, with categories and links to help visitors discover something to watch or listen to during December.

• ReSpec Multipage (2025)

  The lightweight ReSpec extension that turns long W3C specifications into paginated documents without splitting files. It supports section-based navigation, deep linking, printing, offline use, progressive enhancement, and full-document viewing.

• SnipClip (2008)

  A Windows code snippet manager built for easy access, organization, and reuse of code. It supported drag-and-drop, portable use, multiple languages, and XML-based snippet storage, with tools for editing, importing, exporting, and sharing.

• W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines (WSG) Editor and Contributor (2023+)

  I'm an editor and a significant contributor to the specification, involved from its early community draft through to its current W3C publication. I also created the accompanying JSON API and our unique filter system, both helping enhance its maturity.

  • W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines Impact Ratings Editor and Contributor (2026+)

    My contributions include helping define the calculation metrics through the measurement task force and creating the accompanying JSON API. As an editor, I help develop and maintain the Impact Ratings resource and its guidance.

• GSF Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) for Web Contributor (2025+)

  I contribute to the specification, helping define how website and application carbon intensity can be measured across servers, networks, third parties, and end-user devices. Our work shapes how these measurements apply in practice.

• W3C CSS 2.1 Test Suite Contributor (2010)

  A test case I nominated was accepted into the test suite, helping verify browser implementations against the specification. This contribution strengthens testing coverage and supports greater stability and interoperability across web browsers.

• W3C Sustainable Web Interest Group Contributor as Invited Expert (2024+)

  Serving as an editor for it's two specifications, I've been involved since the work began as a community group. I've also played a central role in most of the group's activities, helping shape both its direction and various deliverables.

• Green Software Foundation Contributor (2025+)

  Contributing to an upcoming Green Software Foundation standard for measuring the impact of website and application emissions and its preceding Consensus Design Document, bringing experience of digital sustainability to the work.

• ClimateAction.tech Assembly Member and Contributor (2023+)

  I contribute by engaging with their group, sharing ideas and resources, and promoting its work at events. I also participate in discussions. Furthermore, as part of their assembly I assist in group work where it may benefit the community.

• Sustainable Web Design Community Group Co-Chair and Task-Force Lead (2022 - 2024) [Closed]

  My sustainability work began here, leading the Web Development Task Force and helping shape part of the future WSG specification. I later became Co-Chair, supporting other task forces, and helping the group achieve entry to the W3C.

• W3C Web and AI Interest Group Participant (2025+)

  I contribute perspectives on making AI and machine learning more sustainable, focusing on environmental impact and responsible development. I participate in discussions when possible, bringing a sustainability perspective to the work.

• Threats and Harms Community Group Participant (2026+)

  My focus will be to explore gaps and shared risks at the intersection of accessibility, sustainability, and human rights, and how digital technologies and web standards can better recognise and address these challenges to serve people and the planet.

• No Build Community Group Participant (2026+)

  This group is investigating simpler approaches to web development that reduce reliance on build tooling, with a focus on making websites more direct, maintainable, sustainable, and accessible to developers in practice and at scale.

• Smashing Magazine Expert Panel Member (2012+)

  As a member of Smashing Magazine's Expert Panel, I've contributed industry knowledge and practical insight on web design and development. I've also co-authored two ebooks and articles for Smashing Media over the years (see below).

  While a participant, I contributed to discussions on improving web education and making web standards easier to teach and learn. I shared practical perspectives on web development, standards, and the creation of educational resources.

• SitePoint Community Forums Mentor and Contributor (2008 - 2010)

  During my time as both a mentor and contributor, I shared practical knowledge on web design and development, helping members solve problems and improve their skills. I also contributed more than 8,000 posts across the forums.

  My contribution to the Sustainability chapter included the regulatory and reporting section, as well as practical actions you can take. I also provided extensive editorial support, helping shape and refine the chapter's content, explaining the results.

• The Carbon Impact Of Web Standards Author (2023)

  I researched the energy efficiency of web technologies, measuring how HTML, CSS, media formats, and other features affect the resource use of CPU/GPU, RAM, and data. I analyzed the results to understand their environmental impact and efficiency.

• Tiny.txt: Assets That Will Improve Your Website Author, Self-Published (2023)

  A practical guide to the small but important files that support a website, from robots.txt and sitemaps to security, and metadata files. I explained what these small but powerful assets do and how they can uniquely improve a website.

• 45 Articles For Web Developers Author, Six Revisions (2015)

  I brought together 45 prior published articles on practical web development, drawing on my experience in design, accessibility, usability, responsive development, and other technologies. I organized the collection as a useful resource.

• Essentials Of Mobile Design Contributor, Smashing Media (2012)

  This was a reprint of my contribution, “A Study of Trends in Mobile Design,” from a co-authored ebook. I analyzed 100 major websites to identify emerging patterns in mobile technology, navigation, performance, accessibility, layout, and design.

• Future-Proof Web Design Author, Wiley (2011)

  My guide to creating flexible, adaptable websites that can withstand changes in devices, browsers, and web standards was fairly unique for its time. I focused on forward-thinking practices that improve compatibility, resilience, and usability.

• Distinctive Design: A Practical Guide to a Useful, Beautiful Web Author, Wiley (2011)

  I developed a practical approach to web design that brings together best practices and theory. I focused on showcasing the importance of websites that are distinctive, useful, accessible, and easy to navigate across different devices and users.

• Thinking Web: Voices Of The Community Contributor, SitePoint (2011)

  My two chapter contributions explored accessibility, compatibility, and designing for various needs and technologies. I looked at how designers can build more flexible websites that work well across a wider range of users and devices.

  My practical guide to designing and building websites covers HTML, CSS, JavaScript, content, accessibility, usability, and SEO from creation to consumption. I focus on making web development approachable and easy to understand for beginners.

• Sustainable Tooling And Reporting (STAR) Editor and Creator, W3C (2024+)

  Based on the work of the WAI, I created a document and JSON API containing implmenetation advice, an evaluation methodology, techniques for qualitativly testing W3C WSG success criteria, and a full test suite for toolin validation.

• Web Sustainability Laws and Policies Editor and Creator, W3C (2024+)

  I was the primary driver behind the creation of this document and have been the main contributor ever since. This work has had an especially positive response from policymakers, lobbyists, and corporate workers in citing reasons to be sustainable.

• Web Sustainability Guidelines Resources Editor and Creator, W3C (2023+)

  Originally a wiki stub, I turned it into a supplement cross-referencing appropriately to W3C WSG to manage citations. Furthermore, with over 2,500 cultivated links it remains one of the largest digital sustainability resources on the web.

• Web Sustainability Guidelines Benefits Editor and Contributor, W3C (2023+)

  Previously included within W3C WSG, this supplement has had significant editorial work done to it. I also helped create the categories used throughout to sell the importance of digital sustainability with colleagues, clients, and leadership.

• Web Sustainability Guidelines Quick Reference Editor and Contributor, W3C (2023+)

  This handy little supplement to W3C WSG has gone through many iterations, and I have largely been responsible for implementing those changes, ensuring that we have a user-friendly, compressed version of the guidelines available.

• Web Sustainability Guidelines at a Glance Editor and Contributor, W3C (2023+)

  Aside from editorial work, I implemented the highlights feature and am responsible for both creating and maintaining our useful list of sustainability onboarding materials included within this W3C WSG "too long didn't read" document.

  A map of variables shaping the environmental impact of the Internet. From development and rendering to infrastructure, business and external elements, this visualisation shows the plumbing of measurable ESG impact across the web.

• A Crash Course In Mobile Web Design Author (SitePoint, 2010)

  I created a course for SitePoint's Learnable platform covering mobile web design in the era before responsive design. The course explored best practices for designing effective mobile layouts within the technology constraints of the time.

I enjoy building for the web, particularly where good UI and UX meet the capabilities of the platform. I focus on front-end development creating multi-page websites and single-page applications (SPAs), that are sustainable, inclusive, usable, resilient, and well engineered. I also contribute to open source, sharing code and knowledge with the wider community.

Consulting

I enjoy digging into existing websites and applications to understand how they work, where they fall short, and what could be done better. That might mean an audit, creating detailed reports or product briefs, a tune-up, ongoing maintenance, or stepping back to consider strategy. I particularly enjoy finding the details that others might overlook and turning them into practical improvements.

I enjoy sharing what I've learned through writing, courses, and research. Whether I'm exploring a subject in depth, explaining how something works, or helping others develop their own understanding, I find that teaching is also a way of learning. I'm particularly interested in making complex subjects approachable without losing the detail that makes them useful.

I'm a self-employed web sustainability specialist and responsible digital practitioner with more than 25 years of industry experience, having started my career in 1998. I learned to code at the age of six, and my self-taught career has taken me from software development to inclusive web design and development, and ultimately to web sustainability.

While sustainability is my primary focus, I take a holistic view of responsible digital practice. I see planetary, societal, and technological resilience as interconnected, rather than treating concerns such as accessibility, security, privacy, internationalisation, performance, and sustainability as separate disciplines. My work tends to focus on the front end, but I have a solid understanding of the wider stack and how the different layers and systems underpin the mechanics of the web.

My perspective is also shaped by lived experience. Having invisible disability and health conditions has made me particularly conscious of how climate and societal disruption can disproportionately affect people who are already vulnerable. That makes inclusive, resilient, and sustainable technology more than just a professional interest for me.

I'm a strong believer in contributing to the ecosystem that supports us. Through side projects, writing, and community work, I try to share my time and expertise wherever I can. I've been fortunate to become a W3C Invited Expert, contribute to the Green Software Foundation, and author multiple books.

Ultimately, I'm trying to leave the web in a better state than I found it, and hopefully help others do the same.

Away from technology, I enjoy playing tennis and chess, and watching fantasy films and TV.
